The creation of a relief road around the south-eastern edge of Denny has its origin in the 1970s when the then Denny and District Local Plan considered a number of options for relieving traffic congestion at Denny Cross.

Plans for relief road were eventually finalised in the mid 1990s when a route for an access road to the east of the town centre was safeguarded in the Denny and District Local Plan.

When the first Falkirk Council Structure Plan was prepared it firmed up earlier concepts for the expansion of Denny and indicated that residential expansion should be to the east and south east of the town in the general Mydub Farm area.

Initial plans for the road were published in the Falkirk Council Local Plan, published in 2003. Named the Denny Eastern Access Road (DEAR) it was designed to address three issues

  • To provide access to new housing development sites to the east and southeast of the town centre around the Mydub Farm area
  • To relieve traffic congestion at Denny Cross
  • To reduce traffic pollution in the town centre and improve air quality
